What makes a high-voltage PMSM better
A high-voltage permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) uses permanent magnets for excitation, so it needs no rotor excitation current - giving higher efficiency and a higher power factor. With an HV VFD, it saves significant energy where the load varies, such as fans, pumps and compressors.
Comparison with HV induction
| Item | HV induction (YKK/Y) | HV PMSM (TYPKK) |
|---|---|---|
| Efficiency | High | Higher |
| Power factor | Lower (needs compensation) | High, near 1 |
| Speed control | VFD | With HV VFD |
| Rotor | Wound | Permanent magnet, simple |
| Best for | General HV | Fans / pumps / energy saving |
How to select
Provide: ①load power ②voltage (3/6/10kV) ③speed ④duty ⑤whether VFD speed control is needed. A PMSM usually works with an HV VFD to exploit its energy-saving advantage; if the load is constant with no speed control, HV induction may be more economical.
When it pays off
- Variable load: fans and pumps supply only what is needed.
- Long continuous run: higher efficiency saves a lot on electricity.
- Needs power-factor improvement: high PF reduces reactive compensation investment.
Wangpai HV PMSM range
Wangpai supplies TYPKK HV PMSM VFD (185~5000 kW) and TYCP low-voltage PMSM (7.5~355 kW), matched to an HV VFD.
FAQs
Can an HV PMSM run directly off the grid? Yes, but for speed control use a VFD; otherwise the start method needs special design.
Is a PMSM always more efficient than induction? It is clear with variable load and long runs; difference is smaller on a constant load.
How to get an energy-saving quote? Send load, voltage, speed and whether you need a VFD; we will match the motor and inverter.
