What is a high-voltage motor?
High-voltage (HV) induction motors are typically rated at 3000 V, 6000 V or 10000 V and are used for large driven loads above roughly 185 kW.
HV vs standard motors
| Motor | Voltage | Power | Cooling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Y | 6000/10000 V | 185–5000 kW | Squirrel cage |
| YKK | 3000/6000/10000 V | 185–5000 kW | Box-type, IP44/IP54 |
| YR | 3000/6000/10000 V | 185–5000 kW | Wound rotor (slip ring) |
| YRKK | 3000/6000/10000 V | 185–5000 kW | Wound rotor, water/air cooled |
| YKS | 6000/10000 V | 185–5000 kW | Water-air cooled |
When to choose HV
Use an HV motor for large loads (fans, compressors, pumps, mills) to reduce current and cable cost, and to match a medium-voltage grid. For smaller loads a standard YE3 motor is more economical.
