Why the motor is the heart of a pump
A pump motor is the drive that turns a centrifugal, screw or piston pump. Picking the wrong motor means a pump that runs hot, draws too much power, or simply cannot deliver the required flow and head. Buyers searching for a pump motor usually need three things: the right power (kW), the right speed (rpm), and the right enclosure for the environment.
Common types of pump motors
Most industrial pumps are driven by asynchronous (induction) motors. Depending on pump size and site conditions, the best choice varies:
- Low-voltage three-phase motors (YE3 series) — the standard for small and medium pumps up to roughly 200 kW at 380 V.
- High-voltage motors (Y, YKS, YKK series) — for large water-supply, power-plant and mining pumps where power exceeds the low-voltage limit.
- Permanent-magnet synchronous motors (TYPKK series) — for applications that need higher efficiency and better power factor.
- Variable-frequency / servo motors (YPT series) — when pump speed must be controlled to match demand.
How to select a pump motor
Match the motor to your pump duty, not just to the pipe size. The four parameters that matter most:
| Parameter | What to specify |
|---|---|
| Power (kW) | Motor power slightly above the pump shaft power to allow for losses and duty margin. |
| Speed (rpm) | Usually 2900 / 1450 / 960 / 740 rpm, matched to pump impeller speed to hit the required flow and head. |
| Voltage | Low voltage (380 V) or high voltage (3/6/10 kV) depending on site supply and motor size. |
| Enclosure / IP rating | IP55 or IP54 for general duty; flameproof (Ex) for oil, gas and chemical pump rooms. |
Matching power to common pump sizes
Buyers frequently search by power, so the table below maps typical pump duties to the motor kW range.
| Motor power | Typical pump duty |
|---|---|
| 7.5 kW | Small water-transfer and dosing pumps. |
| 11 kW / 15 kW | Irrigation and small process pumps. |
| 22 kW / 30 kW | Medium water-supply and industrial pumps. |
| 45 kW / 55 kW | Large process and booster pumps. |
| 90 kW / 132 kW | Heavy industrial and municipal pumps. |
| 160 kW – 900 kW | Big high-voltage pumps (high-voltage motor required). |

Jiangsu Wangpai Motor manufactures pump drive motors from small low-voltage units to large high-voltage machines. The ranges below are the ones most often selected for pump applications.
| Series | Application |
|---|---|
| YE3 series | Standard low-voltage three-phase motor for small and medium pumps. |
| Y series (high-voltage) | Large squirrel-cage motor for big water and industrial pumps. |
| YKK series | High-voltage air-cooled motor for large pump drives. |
| YKS series | Water-air cooled high-voltage motor for confined pump rooms. |
| TYPKK series | High-voltage PMSM for energy-efficient pump drives. |
Pump motor FAQ
What does ‘pump motor’ mean?
It is simply the motor used to drive a pump. The same induction motor family drives pumps, fans and compressors; the difference is in rating and mounting.
How do I work out the motor kW for my pump?
Use the pump shaft power (from flow and head on the pump curve), add the transmission and duty margin, then round up to the nearest standard motor size.
Do pump motors need IP55?
In outdoor or dusty pump rooms, IP55 is the usual minimum. For hazardous and chemical pump areas, choose a flameproof / Ex motor.
Can I use a high-voltage motor for a pump?
Yes. For motor ratings above about 200 kW, a 3 kV / 6 kV / 10 kV high-voltage motor is the economic and practical choice.
