Compressor motor duty

A compressor motor drives air, gas or refrigerant compressors. Compressor duty demands a motor with enough starting torque for an unloaded-to-loaded start, steady running under load, and often a higher protection class. Buyers searching compressor motor, air compressor motor or compressor motor supplier need the right kW, speed and starting method.

Compressor motor types

CompressorTypical motor
Reciprocating / piston compressorHigh-starting-torque asynchronous motor (YE3).
Screw / rotary screw compressorAsynchronous or variable-speed motor.
Large plant / industrial compressorHigh-voltage motor (Y, YKK) or energy-efficient design.

How to select a compressor motor

  • Starting torque — match to how the compressor is loaded at start.
  • Power (kW) — from compressor flow, pressure and duty.
  • Speed (rpm) — direct or belt/gearbox coupled.
  • Starting method — DOL, star-delta or soft start for larger motors.

Compressor motor FAQ

What power compressor motor do I need?

From the compressor's flow and working pressure. Sizes range from a few kW on small shop air compressors to hundreds of kW on industrial plants.

Should a compressor motor be high voltage?

For large motors (above roughly 200 kW) a 3 kV / 6 kV / 10 kV high-voltage motor is the economic choice; smaller units run on 380 V.
